Springtown Camp Hall of Fame:

Hall of Fame has its first nominee:

springtowncamp.com would like to announce that Seamus McConnell, formerly of 151a SpringtownCamp is the the first person to be nominated for the Springtown Camp Hall of Fame. The nomination was recieved in an email that was sent in by none other than Willie Deery. Here is a copy of the nomination.?Hugo? I nominate Seamus Mc Connell for the Springtown Camp Hall of Fame. Seamus would be the perfect start to this exciting addition to your site. Seamus was the first person to write a book on the camp and he was instrumental in keeping the name SpringtownCamp in the public domain long after it closed. I know for sure he spent many a long night writing about the camp and his many 1000's of verses are an education to everyone. Actually he was the reason I personally got the Springtown Camp re-unions up and running, which were the fore runner to all the Derry re-unions held since. He always offered me advice and every assistance in anything I have done regarding the place of our boyhood days. This all led to your site and the play and the follow up which is under way at this very moment. We are only STARTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!.So it would be fitting and proper for Seamus to be the first person to kick start the Hall Of Fame.?

Willie  Deery

It has been well documented through the years the role that sadie played in the campaign to have the people of Springtown Camp re-housed.It is only right and fitting that she should take her place in the Springtown Camp Hall of Fame.Sadie Campbell was noninated in an email that was sent in by Frances Clarke. This is what the email said.??Dear Hugo ,?I would like to take this opportunity to nominate Sadie Campbell to the Springtown Camp Hall of Fame.Sadie was one of a group of women who stood up against the Derry corporation with great determination in pursuit of better housing for the people of Springtown Camp Camp. ,?I think it is only right that her contribution to the people of the Springtown should be recognized. I hope I will see her soon in the Hall of Fame.

Frances Clarke

Hall of Fame has its fourth nominee:

Here is a copy of an email sent by Ben Crenshaw nominating ?Mick Powers and Paddy "sauce" Moore for the Springtown Camp Hall of Fame. Here is what Ben wrote:?I'd like to nominate Mick Powers and Sauce Moore in tandem?I was really young, but I remember Ma's relief when we first arrived in the camp to find two men willing to do anything to make us feel at home? And not just us, they were everywhere, finding mattresses to recycle, blankets and the like for those who arrived in winter and didn't have a way to stay warm, borrowing coal and slack balls for the huts with no heat, even stuffing copies of the Belfast Telegraph in the cracks in Mrs McCloons hut to keep out the draughts.?I remember Ma and my granny talking about them as if they'd been sent from heaven?.

Best?,Ben Clingain

Hall of Fame has its fifth nominee:

Here is a copy of an email nominating Willie Campbell to The Springtown Camp Hall Of Fame sent by Denis Campbell
Dear Hugo,?Here's what the Derry Journal said about Willie Campbell's heroic act of bravery on that day in Springtown Camp in 1959 ?It was 50 years ago this week that a brave Derry man risked his own life to save five children from a dangerous blaze at the city's infamous Springtown Camp. ?William Campbell battled the flames in November 1959 to save the youngsters, from the Doherty family, who became trapped when one of the huts caught fire. ?He told the 'Journal' in 1959 that people living in the camp had a choice of whether to "risk fire or freeze."
